By all accounts, the students and teachers who tragically lost their lives in the shooting at Apalachee High School were bright, caring individuals with promising futures and deep ties to their community. The fact that nine others were injured by this senseless violence only deepens our grief. For people of faith, such tragedies can be soul-shaking.
And yet, even as we struggle to reconcile an all-powerful, loving God with the pain and injustice of innocent lives lost, we are called to something higher. We’re called to honor the lives cut short, to support their families and friends, and to stand with all those grieving lives lost to senseless violence. Beyond that, we are called to surrender to love, which never ends. We’re called to look within and uproot any seeds of intolerance and division in our own hearts. We’re called to find the strength and wisdom necessary to transform darkness into light. We are called to work toward a world free from violence and hatred.
I believe we are made in the image and likeness of God, which means it's up to each of us to turn heartbreak into understanding. We must offer comfort where there is pain, love where there is hatred, and peace where there may be a desire for revenge. This work begins with prayer.
Prayer renews hope, strengthens our resolve, and focuses our intentions. It is a powerful force for transformation. So please, join me in praying for peace and understanding in our world. Pray that divine love enfolds the families, friends, and communities affected by this tragedy and all others. Pray that divine guidance supports our efforts to create a just, safe, and loving society. Pray that we address the pain and desperation that fuel violent acts, and that our responses to tragedy are rooted in the unconditional love that Jesus demonstrated.
Peace be with all who are suffering from the impacts of violence. May peace also be within us.
